Wide meadowland criss-crossed with ditchworks where racehorses and cattle graze. Three rivers - the Douve, the Taute and the Sèves cross the area before opening into the vast estuary of the Baie des Veys where a colony of seals lives. See the traditional bocage - the farmland on the hills and polders near the sea... welcome to the land of the Marais de Carentan.
A wild land, classified as the REGIONAL NATURAL PARK of Cotentin and Bessin, in which many species of migratory birds settle in search of peace and abundant food. You'll see shorebirds and ducks in winter, storks, herons and white egrets in the summer. La Maison du Parc, a site set up to discover bird life, river walks and hiking trails, will introduce you to this wonderfully natural and perfectly preserved world.
After D-day Carentan was the site of a bloody battle, eventually won by the 101st Airborne division.
Considered the capital of the wetland area, Carentan has a rich architectural heritage preserved in its historic centre. An imposing church, the village laundry fountain, the sumptuous convent which later became the town hall, medieval covered streets, old manor houses and a striking pleasure port, linked to the sea by a canal.
